Elephant dies after being hit by train in Odisha

Tangi: An elephant was killed after being hit by a goods train near Bhusandapur railway station under Tangi forest division in Khordha district on Saturday evening.

Reports say, the incident took place at evening when a herd of 19 elephants were trying to cross the railway track, when the goods train rammed into the elephants.  Following which one of the elephant sustained injuries in the mishap.

At around 9 pm, the Tangi forest officials spotted the injured pachyderm at the Ugratara Jungle and then the herd of elephants pushed the injured one into the forest.

On sunday morning, some onlookers spotted the carcass of the elephant near the Bhusandapur railway station and informed the forest officials. The officials reached the spot and seized the carcass of the elephant.

The forest officials said that the elephant herd comprising 30-35 jumbos had moved to the forest near Bhusandapur from Chandaka forest area and often strays into the nearby farmland in night hours in search of food.
