Elephant dies after being hit by train in Angul

Soon, the officials of the forest department reached the spot and started an investigation. However, they had to halt their investigation process owing to darkness.

Angul: In a saddening incident, an elephant died after reportedly being hit by a train near Dehurisahi in Jarpada forest range of the Angul district last night.

The pachyderm died on the spot after it was hit by the 20832/Mahima Gosain Express train while it was crossing the railway line around 9-9.30 PM yesterday. The impact of the mishap was so severe that the train dragged the jumbo about 30 meters ahead.

Soon, the officials of the forest department reached the spot and started an investigation. However, they had to halt their investigation process owing to darkness.

The forest officials with some senior officers resumed their investigation this morning, said sources adding that a huge crowd gathered at the spot to see the dead elephant, which is lying near the rail track.

Meanwhile, the forest department held the railway department responsible for the death of the elephant. The railway department was informed about the presence of elephants in the area, claimed Angul DFO Vivek Kumar adding that despite the prior information, the speed of the train was very high.
