Elephant calf rescued from ditch in Odisha’s Sambalpur

Sambalpur: An elephant calf was rescued on Sunday morning by Sambalpur forest officials. The baby and another adult elephant, which had entered to save the calf but got stuck later, were rescued from a ditch in Kumre forest range in Basiapada under Jujumara block.

It was reported that a herd of 24 elephants were sighted in nearby areas since last one month. Four baby elephants were part of this herd.

The herd, reportedly, was moving from forests in Jujumara range to another in Dhama range. The herd had stopped near the ditch for drinking water from the ditch. Since it was dark on of the calves fell into the ditch. Its mother, in attempting to rescue it, also fell into the ditch and was unable to come out of it.

On being called upon, forest officials rushed to the spot and began the rescue operation. Upon rescue, the enraged elephant went on to damage a number of vehicles present at the spot.

 

It has come to light that this herd of elephants has created much destruction and caused panic in the area. While a person was killed, several houses and farms have been destroyed.
