Elephant calf gets stuck in mud while drinking water in Odisha; dies

Sundergarh: In what could make the animal lovers unhappy, an elephant calf died after getting stuck in mud while drinking water at Dalakudar village under Kuanrmunda range in Sundergarh district of Odisha on Friday.

The four-month-old elephant had reportedly gone to a pond along with five other elephants to drink water. However, it got stuck in the mud and subsequently died on the spot, informed Kuanrmunda ranger in-charge Manoj Tiga.

On being informed about the death of the jumbo, a team of forest officials rushed to the spot and conducted autopsy to ascertain the cause behind the death of the animal.

Taking serious note of the incident, Rourkela DFO Sanjay Kumar Swain suspended Balanda forest guard and issued show-cause notices to Kuanrmunda ranger and Kalunga forester.
