Elderly man killed in wild pachyderm attack

Angul: In yet another case of human-animal conflict in the state, a man was killed in wild elephant attack in Barapada village under Kishore Nagar block in the district last night.

The deceased has been identified as Susheel Behera.

Susheel was sleeping inside a bamboo house set up near his farmland in the village, to guard the crop when the mishap took place. Late in the night, a wild pachyderm which sneaked into the crop field attacked the bamboo house and lifted Susheel with the trunk before throwing to a distance. The victim died on the spot.

Getting information on the incident, Kishore Nagar Police reached the spot and seized the body this morning.

Locals have alleged the forest officials’ negligence for the incident of last night as over past few days, elephant movement has registered an increase in the area. Despite their repeated demand for intervention, the officials are not turning up, villagers claimed.
