Elderly man killed, couple critical in elephant attack in Sundergarh

Sundergarh: With no respite in sight from human-animal conflict in the State, an elderly man was killed and two others sustained critical injuries after being attacked by a wild tusker in Hamirpur village under Sundergarh Sadar Forest Range here last night.

As per the report, a wild tusker which had sneaked into the village in search of food late last night reportedly damaged a few houses and chased and attacked a couple identified as Karunakar Sahoo and Padmini Sahoo. However, they managed to save their lives despite sustaining severe injuries in the pachyderm attack.

The couple was rushed to Sundergarh DHH by some locals post the incident and then shifted to Burla Hospital.

Later, the tusker sneaked into the nearby Katingidihi area and trampled one Shankar Tandia to death.

Forest department officials have reached the spot and efforts are underway to keep the jumbo away from human settlements.
