Bhubaneswar: The commissionerate police have decided to use drones to keep hawk’s eye on traffic violators in the state capital.

Police said that in the first phase, the drones will be used to detect traffic violations near traffic junctions between Airport Square and Rabindra Mandap Square.

Police said that the use of drones will further strengthen the CCTV surveillance which is currently being used to detect traffic violations. Police said that the use of drones will also be extended to other parts of the city in the near future.

The state government is planning to impose hefty penalty from September 1 on violators under the amended motor vehicles (amendment) bill 2019. As per the new rules motorcycle riders, who now pay Rs 100 fine for not wearing helmet, will hence cough up Rs 1000 under the amended law. Driving without licence may cost Rs 5000 fine whereas drunk driving will attract a penalty of Rs 10000.
