Jagatsinghpur: A dreaded criminal was brutally hacked to death by a group of bike-borne assailants in Kulataranga village under Sadar Police Station area in the district last night.
The deceased has been identified as Nrusingha Barik alias Nuri.
As per the eyewitnesses, at least four persons on two bikes chased Nrusingha on a road near his home while he was returning from work and attacked him with sharp weapons. Nrusingha sustained severe injuries in the attack and died on the spot.
Sadar Police reached the spot immediately and rushed the dead body for post-mortem. Police also arrested the main accused in the incident identified as Chandan Sahoo while conducting an investigation into the incident.
While the exact reason behind the attack is yet to be known, the family members of the victim suspected it to be fallout of past enmity between Nrusingha and Chandan over an Anganwadi building construction work tender. Nrusingha had recently got the tender.
Police said the deceased had a number of cases pending against him at different police stations in the district.
