Dolphin Count Rises To 544 In Odisha, Informs Forest Department

Bhubaneswar: The number of dolphins has increased by 311 in Odisha taking the total number up to 544 this year, informed Forest Department. According to the 2020 census, there were a total of 233 dolphins in the state.

According to reports, the number of ‘Humpback’ and the ‘Bottlenose’ species of dolphins have increased sharply.

Meanwhile, three species of dolphins have been identified in Chilika, Rajnagar, Puri, Bhadrak and Balasore. There are 188 dolphins in Chilika Lake, 342 in Rajnagar forest range, four in Puri forest range, eight in Bhadrak forest range and two in Balasore forest range whereas no dolphins have been spotted in Berhampur forest range.

A total of 281 humpback dolphins have been identified this year whereas only two were identified in 2020. On the other hand, 209 Irrawaddy dolphins have been identified whereas there were 208 dolphins last year.
