Dolphin Census Begins At Odisha’s Chilika

Puri: The annual headcount exercise of  Irrawaddy dolphins inhabiting the water bodies of Chilika has begun on Sunday.

Chilika is now home to one of the endangered species, the Irrawaddy dolphins.

The counting will take place in the Tangi and Balugaon ranges.

As many as 18 teams have been deployed to conduct the dolphin census at Chilika. Along with the  senior officials of the State forest department, Wildlife experts and OUAT officials. They began counting the census at 6 AM today will continue till 12 PM.

During the dolphin counting, materials such as GPS, cameras, handycams will be used along with some traditional methods.

Till the last reports came, 209 Irrawaddy dolphins were identified.

Chilika is the single largest habitat of the slow-swimming dolphins in the world that got their names from Irrawaddy river in Myanmar where they were first sighted.
