Bhubaneswar: The Bhubaneswar Municipal Commission (BMC) has banned ‘Paya Shraddha’ and ‘Pinda Dana’ ritual on the day of Diwali this year also at Bindu Sagar and Lingaraj temple in Bhubaneswar of Odisha. The restrictions has been put in force with apprehension of spread of Covid if large congregation would be allowed.

Reportedly, there is no crowd this year also to pay homage to the ancestors and chant, “Bada badiya ho, andhara re asa, aloka re jao” (Ancestors, come in darkness and go back along the lighted path).

BMC has taken such step yet again this year due to the fluctuation in Covid cases in Bhubaneswar.

Odias offer paya shraddha and Pinda dana on Deepawali day. Many residents in Bhubaneswar use to get these rituals executed at Bindu Sagar.

It is pertinent to mention that the burning of Kaunriya Kathi in front of Puri Srimandir’s Singhadwar has also been banned during this Diwali. The administration has decided to ban this ritual as it causes noticeable amount of air pollution which might lead to the increase in Covid infection especially in those affected with the virus.
