Tata Steel launches Green School Project with workshop series in Sukinda

Sukinda Mines' Work ShopSukinda: With a view to creating awareness about environmental issues in school campuses in its operational areas, Tata Steel, in association with The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI),  started the first series of workshops for students at Sukinda Chromite Mine (SCM) here in Jajpur district in Odisha on Monday.

The workshop– ‘Be Ecomatic – Eco-friendly intuitively’, under the Green School Project, was inaugurated by Mr M C Thomas, Executive-in-Charge, Ferro Alloys and Minerals Division, in the presence of Mr Rajesh Patel, Chief, Mining, SCM Tata Steel, Ms Shruti Agarwal, Senior Manager, Regulatory Affairs, Tata Steel and teachers and students of the identified schools in and around Sukinda.

The workshop will run in phases till September 23 in all the identified schools across raw material locations of Tata Steel in the state.

Speaking on the occasion, Thomas said, “The overall objective of the workshop is to create awareness among students on climate change and how sustainable lifestyle can help mitigate the adverse impact of climate change.”

“The project promotes environmental stewardship in identified schools through classroom and outdoor activities to improve critical, interdisciplinary and holistic thinking,” he added.

Thomas also launched a waste paper recycling kit during the workshop. The schools have been provided the recycling kits to recycle waste paper and make useful products.

‘Be Ecomatic – Eco-friendly intuitively’ workshop focuses on spreading awareness and building capacities on four themes – waste, water, energy and biodiversity – among the school community depending on their needs.

Hundreds of students took part in the event with great enthusiasm.
