arrestPuri: Police arrested the owner of a private nursing home in the city along with a middleman this morning, after family members of a new born who died in the facility held them responsible for the death.

The arrested persons have been identified as owner of Sibanand Hursing Home and Hospital Dr Sagar Ranjan Srichandan and middleman Krushna Chandra Mohanty.

A relative of the dead new born said the expectant mother Sangita Mohapatra of Kalikadebi Sahi in the city was rushed to the Puri District Headquarters Hospital last night after she reported labour pain. But minutes after she reached the hospital, the middleman Krushna diverted her to the Sibanand Nursing Home with a promise of better facility there. However, their expectations received a serious jolt early morning today after Sangita gave birth to a girl child and no specialist doctor came to attend the baby. Due to the lack of timely medical care the new born died at around 4 am.

The arrested nursing home owner too has admitted that medical negligence caused the death of the new-born.

Following the arrest of the nursing home owner, locals in the area claimed that he was operating the nursing home without basic minimum medical facilities, which had caused two deaths in the past under similar conditions. They have demanded immediate closure of the facility.
