pregnant womanNabarangpur: In yet another case of an expecting mother finding it difficult to access the facilities under Janani Suraksha Yojan (JSY), a state government initiative to ensure safe motherhood, a pregnant woman had to walk a distance of one kilometre before boarding an 102 ambulance in Murlibai village under Nandahandi block of the district Friday morning.

Reports say the pregnant woman, identified as Kasturi Jani of Murlibai village, experienced labour pain this morning. The family members of the woman immediately called up the 102 ambulance, which arrived but remained stationed outside the village in the absence of a road to the village.

With no other options left, the woman had to walk a distance of one kilometre on a muddy road to reach the ambulance. She was shifted to the nearby Dangarbheja Hospital by the ambulance to deliver a baby.

The incident has sparked off resentment among the villagers, who are blaming the district administration for not taking any step to construct a pucca road into the village. As a martyr’s village, Murlibai village needs special attention from the government, they claim. Residents of the village had resorted to election boycott in the past, but to no avail, reports say.
