Nuapada: More than forty people of Arjuna village under Boden block in Odisha’s Nuapada district have been hospitalised with diarrhoea since last night.

“People with acute diarrhoea were admitted to the community health centre (CHC) at Boden. Almost all of them have been treated and their condition is stable now,” said Dr Sudhakar Patnaik.

Sources said, two tube wells out of total three of the village have become dysfunctional and all the inhabitants of the village now depend on the only tube well, which is reportedly in a depleted condition.

Water contamination is being the suspected cause of the diarrhoea outbreaks in the village, sources added.

Meanwhile, a team of health officials visited the village and took stock of the situation. A health camp was also conducted at the Anganwadi centre of the village to treat the villagers.

Health officials also sprayed bleaching powder around the tube well and other places in the village as a preventive measure.

Diarrhoea is a water- and food-borne infection that can be caused by viruses, bacteria or parasites. It causes watery stools, stomach cramps, nausea vomiting, headache and appetite loss.
