Dhanu Jatra-2017: Audition for role of king ‘Kansa’ begins Bargarh: Audition for the role of king ‘Kansa’, who plays a vital role in the world famous Dhanu Jatra, began at District Primary Education Programme (DPEP) office here on Tuesday.

As many as 27 artistes have taken part in the audition. A five-member special jury will select one of them to play the role of king ‘Kansa’ during the 11-day grand festival that is based on Krishna Leela and Mathura Vijay.

The story begins with the legendary king of Mathura Kansa ascending the throne and ends with Krishna killing his uncle Kansa.

Significantly, Kansa can punish people with penalty for their mistakes during the festival, which is considered as world’s largest open air theatre.

During the festival, Bargarh becomes the city of Mathura, the river Jeera becomes the Yamuna and Ambapali situated on the other side of Jeera becomes Gopapura.

The district collector and president of the Dhanu Jatra organising committee Khagendra Kumar Padhi on Sunday set up the ‘Subha Stambha’ (holy stone) at Hatapada, the spot where Dhanu Jatra will be performed between December 23 and January 2.
