Bhubaneswar: Jewellery shops across the State and the country are swelling up with customers on the occasion of ‘Dhanteras,’ on Tuesday. Considered an auspicious day for purchasing gold and silver ornaments, most of the jewellery shops are giving away exciting offers to attract more people.
‘Dhanteras,’ marks the onset of Diwali and ‘Dhanvantari’ is worshipped on the occasion. Although, ‘Dhanvantari,’ the physician of Gods, is related to health more than wealth, a lot of people indulge in purchasing metals and utensils and even automobiles.
Goddess of wealth ‘Lakshmi’ is also worshipped and traditional motifs are painted on floor to welcome her.
As per the legend, on this day, wife of a 16-year old King Hima saved him from death which had to occur due to a snake-bite as predicted in his horoscope. On the day, she laid out heaps of jewellery and lighted lamps which blinded the snake that had come to bite the King.
In villages, cattles, the main source of income of the farmers are also worshipped.
