Denied pocket money, youth thrashes grandfather to death in Odisha

Baripada: In a shocking incident, a youth allegedly murdered his grandfather after he denied to give him pocket money to celebrate the ‘Makar Sankranti’ today. The incident has taken place at Dantiamuha village under Betnoti police limits in Mayurbhanj district of Odisha.

The deceased has been identified as Benudhar Dehury (70) while the accused has been identified as Ramachandra Dehury (25).

According to sources, Ramachandra demanded some pocket money to his grandmother Rama Dehury. However, when she denied he started assaulting her, following which Benudhar intervened. As Benudhar asked Rama to run way from the site, Ramachandra got angry and thrashed the elderly person mercilessly with a wooden plank causing his death on the spot.

“He (Ramachandra) asked me 1000 rupees this morning as pocket money to celebrate the Makar Sankranti. However, he started beating me after I denied to give him the money. When my husband came to know he asked me to leave the place, following which Ramachandra had a heated argument with my husband and beat him to death,” alleged Rama.

Betnoti police reached the village after getting information about the crime and arrested Ramachandra, whom the locals had tied on a tree. Besides, they have started an investigation into the matter after sending the body to the hospital for postmortem.
