woman deliversBerhampur: Tension gripped the Maharaja Krishna Chandra Gajapati (MKCG) Medical College and Hospital premises on Thursday afternoon after a pregnant woman delivered on the terrace of the hospital after being denied entry into the Labour Room.

The unfortunate incident occurred when Pramodini Kutharsingh, a resident of Panda Colony in Berharmpur town, was rushed to the hospital by family members following labour pain. It is alleged that the doctors on duty in the Gynaecology and Obstetrics department of the hospital at that time prevented Pramodini from entering the Labour Room. They were of the opinion that as the patient was not accompanied by an Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) worker, she could not be allowed inside the room.

Finding no other option available, the woman delivered a child on the terrace of the hospital with the help of some women present there. The incident, which occurred right in front of the indoor delivery ward of the hospital, sparked off sharp resentment among the relatives of the woman and other visitors who protested the callousness of the staffs.

Police reached the spot following the incident and pacified the crowd after shifting the woman to the Labour Ward.
