Demand for HC bench: 48-hour ‘Maha Bandh’ cripples Western Odisha

Sambalpur: The demand for the establishment of a permanent bench of Orissa High court in western Odisha intensified as the members of the Sambalpur District Bar Association and several organisations observed a 48-hour Maha Bandh across the region on November 29 and 30.

Lawyers in Sundargarh and Subarnapur also extended their support to the stir and picketed at government offices in their respective districts.

Earlier on the day, hundreds of lawyers halted Sambalpur-Puri and Sambalpur-Rayagada Intercity trains at Khetrajpur station.

Vehicular traffic on the roads came to a grinding halt in the region, while educational institutions and business establishments remained closed due to the Maha Bandh.

With vehicular communication coming to a standstill in many parts in western Odisha, commuters had a narrowing time reaching their destinations.

Bandh supporters also held a rally and resorted to picketing and road blockade in important junctions in several towns.

The lawyers of the west Odisha have been demanding establishment of a bench of the high court for several decades now. They had also staged a demonstration in front of Jantar Mantar in New Delhi and near the high court in Cuttack to press their demand.
