Decision to reopen schools may change: DMET Odisha

Bhubaneswar: The school reopening decision for class 1 to 5 students is likely to change, informed Director of the Directorate of Medical Education and Training (DMET) Chief Rama Raman Mohanty. This came after another Omicron Covid positive case was detected this morning.

“Government had decided to reopen schools as per Covid situation then. Neither Odisha had reported any Omicron positive cases, nor there was an increase in daily infections. However, as cases are increasing including the Omicron variant, the decision for reopening of the schools likely to change,” said DMET Chief.

It is to be noted that School and Mass Education Minister Samir Ranjan Dash had informed regarding the reopening of primary schools from classes 1-5 from January 3, 2022. Pointing out that online classes will also continue, Dash said the students can attend offline classes in consultation with their parents or guardians.

Meanwhile, the chairman of the Parents’ Association Basudev Bhatt has reacted against the decision of reopening schools and said that the government has taken the decision hurriedly.

He said that while the Health Department has warned of a third wave likely to affect Odisha soon, how the government decided to reopen schools. “The students can be taught later also, but their safety is more important,” he said. He has also urged the government to reconsider this decision amid the Omicron threat.
