‘Daye’ Triggered Flood: CM announces 7-day relief for Malkangiri district

Bhubaneswar: In view of the flood-like situation caused by cyclonic storm ‘Daye’ in Malkangiri, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik today announced a relief for seven days for the district.

After making a thorough review of the prevailing flood situation in Malkangiri district via video conferencing this morning, the CM ordered the district administration to remain alert and make an assessment of the loss incurred along with supply of relief materials to the affected people for at least a week.

As per the decision taken at the review meeting, Gratuitous Relief (GR) worth Rs 60 per day per adult and Rs 45 per per day per minor aged below 12 years will be provided in the district.

Notably, incessant rain triggered by cyclonic storm ‘Daye’ since last night had inundated the whole of Malkangiri district. While road communication between Malkangiri and Balimela has been disrupted by the flood water, all eight rivers in the district are in spate. Flood water has also gushed into Tarlakata and Sikapali areas in Kalimela tehsil, MV-11, MV-37, Kangurukonda, Poteru and flowing above 4-5 feet above several bridges in these areas.

Malkangiri has been most affected by the cyclonic storm in the state so far with Korukonda block alone receiving 403 mm rainfall in last 24 hours.

Papermetla Police and a 11-member ODRAF team from Bhubaneswar are carrying out rescue operations in the district.
