Day after torching paddy field, Odisha farmer commits suicide

Odisha farmer torches pest-affected paddy field in 50 acres landBargarh: Farmer Brunda Sahu of Kalapani village of the district, who set his paddy filed on fire yesterday, committed suicide on Wednesday.

According to reports, Sahu went to the same paddy field early this morning and consumed poison there. He was rushed to the district headquarter hospital where he breathed his last while undergoing treatment.

Annoyed over the alleged apathetic nature of the district administration, the farmer had torched his paddy field yesterday.

Brunda Sahu had grown paddy in acres of land. He had reportedly informed the district administration after insects damaged the crops. Since the district administration did not respond to his plea, the peasant got fumed over it and torched his paddy filed.

Agriculture Minister Damodar Rout, following the news, had directed the district authority to submit a report within 48 hours and directed a team of agricultural experts to conduct an on spot investigation.

Notably, this is the third farmer suicide report from the district, which is considered as the rice bowl of the state, in last week.
