Cyclone ‘Titli’: What you must do before, during and after the storm

Bhubaneswar: As cyclone ‘Titli’ over the Bay of Bengal intensified into a very severe cyclonic storm today and moving towards the coast, Odisha government, apart from beginning evacuation of people in five coastal districts, issued a series of warnings and advisory for the people to follow before, during and after the storm.

Cyclone ‘Titli’ is likely to make a landfall at about 5.30 am Thursday.

Before the cyclone

  • Ignore rumours. Stay calm, don’t panic
  • Keep your mobile phones charged to ensure connectivity’ use SMS
  • Listen to radio, watch TV, read newspapers for weather updates
  • Prepare an emergency kit with essential items for safety and survival
  • Secure your house, carry out repairs. Don’t leave sharp objects loose
  • Untie cattle/animals them to ensure their safety

During & After Cyclone

If you’re indoors

  • Switch off electrical mains, gas supply
  • Keep doors and windows shut
  • If your house is unsafe, leave early before the onset of the cyclone
  • Listen to radio/transistor
  • Drink boiled/chlorinated water
  • Rely only on official warnings

If you’re outdoors

  • Don’t enter damaged buildings
  • Watch out for broken electric poles and wires, other sharp objects
  • Seek a safe shelter as soon as possible

For Fishermen

  • Keep a radio set with extra batteries handy
  • Keep boats or rafts tied up in a safe place
  • Don’t venture out in the sea
