Cyclone Titli: 8 Andhra fishermen rescued off Gopalpur coast

Berhampur: By ensuring the ‘Zero Casualty’ target of the Odisha Government in the onslaught of Very Severe cyclonic storm ‘Titli’ which hit the Odisha coast last night, rescue teams saved at least 8 fishermen of Andhra Pradesh from Gopalpur coast this morning.

Odisha DGP RP Sharma said, at least 35 trawlers carrying 150 fishermen had set out on a journey for fishing into the deep sea off Gopalpur coast on Wednesday despite repeated warnings by the administration. However, they were stuck in the mid sea after the landfall of ‘Titli’ on Odisha coast last night.

After the fishermen found them in trouble late last night due to the growing intensity of the cyclone and made an SOS call, Ganjam district administration swung into action. A joint team of Indian Coast Guard, NDRF and ODRAF personnel searched out and rescued at least 26 fishermen today following a night-long operation in the disturbed Gopalpur Sea.

Ganjam Collector, Southern Range DIG, SPs of Ganjam and Berhampur closely monitored the rescue operation.

Efforts are on to find out the rest of the fishermen from the sea, said source.
