Cyclone JAWAD: Low pressure likely to intensify into depression today

Bhubaneswar: The low pressure that has been formed over Andaman Sea is likely to move towards west-northwestwards and intensify into depression over central Bay of Bengal today. Following this, the depression is further likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm on December 3.

Reportedly, the coastal areas of Odisha is likely to experience the maximum impact on December 4. The fishermen have been asked not to venture into the sea for the next three days.

The exact location and the intensity of the cyclonic storm can be ascertained post the intensification of the low pressure today, said: Director General (DG) of India Meteorological Department (IMD) Mrutyunjay Mohapatra.

The wind speed can increase upto 100 to 110 kilometers per hour. The weathermen have been closely tracking the movement of cyclone JAWAD, added reports.

Heavy to very heave rainfall will be experienced in the coastal areas of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh. The weather is likely to change from today. Hence, the IMD has issued warnings to the concerned parts of the states. There is even a possibility of extensive crop damage due to which the farmers will be affected eventually.

Odisha Chief Secretary Suresh Chandra Mahapatra on Wednesday directed the collectors of the districts, which are likely to be affected by the possible cyclone, to stay alert and make the shelter homes ready to meet any eventuality.

The Bhubaneswar regional centre of IMD has issued Red, Yellow and Orange warnings for following districts of Odisha:

• Red warning: Heavy to very heavy rainfall very likely to occur at a few places over the districts of Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri and Jagatsinghpur.
• Yellow warning: Heavy rainfall very likely to occur at isolated places over the districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur and Malkangiri.
• Orange warning: Heavy to very heavy rainfall very likely to at one or two places over the districts of Kendrapara, Cuttack, Khurda, Nayagarh, Kandhamal Rayagada and Koraput.
