Cyclone JAWAD: Depression over BoB likely to intensify into severe cyclonic storm in next 24 hours!

Bhubaneswar: The Depression over southeast Bay of Bengal is likely to move northwestwards and intensify into a cyclonic storm over central parts of the Bay of Bengal today.

It moved west-northwestwards with a speed of 32 kmph during past six hours and lay centered at 11.30 pm of December 2, over the same region near latitude 12.0°N and ongitude 87.5°E, about 770 km south-southeast of Vishakhapatnam, 850 km south-southeast of Gopalpur and 920 km south-southeast of Paradip.

Reportedly, it is likely to move northwest direction and intensify further into a severe cyclonic storm in next 24 hours. During this time, the wind speed will be 90 to 100 kilometers per hour which can reach upto a maximum of 110 kmph.

The system is likely to reach the coasts of northern Andhra Pradesh and southern Odisha on December 4 morning. Thereafter it is likely to move north-northeastwards.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has not yet mentioned where the system will exactly move. IMD Director-General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra has said that irrespective of the fact that the system will cross Odisha’s coastal areas or not, the State is likely to be affected due to Cyclone JAWAD. Hence, danger signal 1 has been issued to all ports in the state.

Fishermen are advised not to venture into southeast and adjoining east-central Bay of Bengal till today, December 3, west-central & adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal and along & off north Andhra Pradesh – Odisha- West Bengal coasts till December 5.

The off-shore & alongshore operations along Odisha coast (Viz., All ports of Odisha, ITR Chandipur, Army Defence College, Gopalpur, INS Chilika, Chilika Development Authority establishment, ICZMP activity, Bhitarkanika wildlife sanctuary, Kendrapada, ONGC Odisha etc) are advised to be judiciously regulated on today, 3rd December and will be suspended on December 4, to ensure safety of life and property.
