Cyclone Fani: Nandankanan zoo to remain closed for three days

Bhubaneswar: The authorities of Nandankanan zoo has decided to close the zoo from May 2 to May 4 in view of cyclone Fani. The zoo authorities have also decided to keep all the captive animals in feeding chambers.

Deputy Director of the zoo, Jayant Dash said that the decision to close the zoo was taken to ensure the safety of tourists. “Leaves of all employees of the zoo have been cancelled. A team of doctors has been asked to keep a close watch on the health of captive animals. Adequate medicine and food material have been stocked in the zoo,” said Dash.

The zoo officials have also been directed to store sufficient diesel, kerosene and petrol and to ensure alternative power supply by Thursday. “We have already started the inspection of trees outside the animal enclosures and the branches of trees will be trimmed as per requirement. Adequate vehicles have also been arranged to lift tree branches after the cyclone,’ added Dash.

The zoo has currently more than 3400 animals belonging to 156 species including 80 species of birds.
