Cyclone Asani: Depression weakens into well-marked low pressure area

Bhubaneswar: The Depression (remnant of cyclonic storm ‘ASANI’) over coastal Andhra Pradesh weakened into a Well Marked Low-Pressure Area over the same region at 8.30 am today, informed Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar.

According to the reports of the weather department, the system is likely to weaken further into a Low-Pressure Area during the next 12 hours.

Earlier this morning, the deep depression weakened into a depression.

Bhubaneswar MeT centre scientist Umashankar Das said that the system will have no impact on Odisha now even as rains accompanied by squally winds continued in parts of coastal Andhra Pradesh.

Although all danger warning signals have also been withdrawn from the port zones with immediate effect. However, restrictions that had been imposed on the entry of fishermen into sea areas will continue to remain enforced.

Notably, cyclonic storm Asani had weakened into a deep depression post-Wednesday afternoon as it lay near the Andhra Pradesh coast last evening. Cyclone Asani crossed the Andhra Pradesh coast between Machilipatnam and Narsapur from 5.30 pm to 7.30 pm as a deep depression with a wind speed of 55-65 kmph gusting to 75 kmph.

Adding to it, due to cyclone ‘Asani’, the highest rainfall is recorded in Khordha district, followed by Gajapati and Naigarh. Ghasipura block in Kendujhar district recorded 72.3 mm rain, Kanas block in Puri district with 56mm rain, informed Special Relief Commissioner Pradeep Kumar Jena.
