Curfew lifted in Kendrapara, Section 144 remains in force

Kendrapara: Around 24 hours after communal tension flared up in Kendrapara town, the situation started limping back to normalcy this morning and the district administration lifted the curfew from 6 am. However, the prohibitory orders imposed under Section 144 remained in force in the town.

The decision of lifting the curfew was taken after the Kendrapara town remained peaceful since last night and no incidents of protest took place. Earlier in the evening a meeting was held between peace committee members, Central Range Inspector General (IG) Soumendra Priyadarshi, RDC Central Division Mahendra Kumar Mallick and Energy Secretary Hemant Sharma, local MLA Kishor Tarai, District Collector Dasarathy Satpathy and SP Niti Shekhar. During the meeting the committee members assured the administration to bring back normalcy to the town.

As per another important decision taken during yesterday’s meeting, the ‘Peace Committee’ held a rally in Kendrapara town at around 9 am in the morning which marched from the old bus stand to Tinimuhani to bring back confidence among the locals.

Notably, tension surfaced between two groups over organising an event to mark the birthdays of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose and Veer Surendra Sai at Government High School ground in Kendrapara on January 23. Later, hurling of stones and bottles took place the two groups and the administration swung into action to clamp curfew.
