Cowman shot at in Koraput; Maoist hand suspected

Koraput: People were left in a state of panic in Pottangi block in the district last night after a cowman sustained critical injury after being shot at by unidentified men and police suspected the hand of Maoists behind the attack.

The incident took place at around 6 PM in the evening while the victim identified as Laba Pangi of Galigabadar village was returning after grazing his cows in a pasture near the village. The miscreants opened fire at him from behind in which he sustained numerous gun shots on his back and fell unconscious.

The victim was first rushed to Pottangi CHC by his family members following the attack and from there shifted to Koraput Medical College later in the night due to critical condition.

Pottangi Police Station IIC Dev Kumar Gamang and Sunabeda SDPO also reached the hospital to enquire about the health condition of the victim.

“I shall not be able to identify the attackers as I have not seen their faces during the firing. They struck from behind and fled away, said Laba, whose condition is stated to be stable now.

On the other hand police said, the hand of Maoists in the attack could not be ruled out as they are observing Martyrs’ Week from July 28-August 3 in the state.

An investigation is underway in the case.
