Court grants conditional bail to Abhijit Iyer Mitra

Bhubaneswar/Delhi: The Delhi Saket Court granted conditional bail to Abhujit Iyer Mitra, a journalist and a friend of former Kendrapara MP Baijayant Panda short while after he was arrested by Odisha Police today on charges of making derogatory remarks on Konard Sun Temple.

The court granted conditional bail to Iyer till September 28 on a surety of Rs 1 lakh and directed him to depose before Konark Police Station for interrogation on the same day.

The court also rejected Odisha Police’s appeal to take Mitra on a transit remand.

Mitra who was taken into custody from Nizamuddin Police limits earlier today was taken to Nizamuddin Police Station for interrogation and then produced in the Saket Court after a medical check-up.

Earlier in the day, Odisha Assembly Speaker Pradip Amat formed a 6-member House Committee to look into the derogatory remark row under the Chairmanship of Leader of Opposition (LoP) Narasingha Mishra.

Earlier, Mishra moved a privilege motion in the House on the issue on which Amat allowed for a discussion. Leaders cutting across party lines demanded stringent punishment for Iyer for his attempt to defame Odia sculpture and art.
