Angul: A woman was killed and her husband sustained critical bullet injury after a neighbour opened fire at them over sharing ‘venison’ or deer meat in Raida village under Thakurgarh police limits in the district last night.

The deceased has been identified as Ratani Pradhan.

As per a complaint filed by Ratani’s brother-in-law Gagan Pradhan at Thakurgarh Police Station, the incident took place at around 6.30 PM in the evening on Wednesday. Ratani and her husband Anam Pradhan were standing on a village road when the accused identified as Rabindra Bhoi approached them and started verbal abusing. He was heard reprimanding Anam over not giving him a proper share of venison, which the duo had collected after killing a deer during a hunting spree in a nearby forest on Tuesday. The accused fired at least three rounds of bullet targeting Anam, of which Ratani was struck with one in a bid to save her husband. She died on the spot.

Anam was struck with a bullet on his right leg, immediately rushed to the Angul DHH and later shifted to SCB Medical in Cuttack due to deteriorating condition.

While Thakurgarh Police have seized the body reaching the spot, the accused is absconding since the incident.
