Cops distribute free helmets in Bhubuneswar

Bhubaneswar:  With a view to create ‘road safety’ awareness among the citizens, the Commissionerate Police distributed free helmets to the people who have been caught riding two-wheelers without helmets here on Saturday.

Police Commissioner Satyajit Mohanty, DCP Anup Sahoo, Traffic ACP Anup Kanungo and Traffic IIC Surendra Bal were present during the drive near AG square in the city.

The police personnel were seen explaining the bikers about safe driving, using of helmets, traffic rules etc.

People who were not wearing helmets were usually intercepted and fined for violating safety norms, said a senior official. “However, they were today surprised by being given a helmet.”

The bikers were also asked to follow traffic rules and ensure their own safety while riding two-wheeler or sitting in pillion , he added.

As many as 500 helmets, sponsored by  bike-taxi services provider company Rapido, were distributed free of cost during the special drive today, sources said.
