Shillong : The National People’s Party (NPP) President Conrad Sangma took oath as the Chief Minister of Meghalaya on Tuesday.

The NPP Chief, who is the son of former Lok Sabha Speaker late PA Sangma, was administered the oath of office and secrecy by Governor Ganga Prasad at a function here.

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and BJP President Amit Shah were present in the swearing-in ceremony of the NPP-led Government.

Earlier, Sangma was invited by the Governor to form the government after he staked the claim with the support of 34 MLAs in the 60-member Assembly.

The MLAs include 19 from NPP, six from United Democratic Party, four of the People’s Democratic Front, two each of the Hill State People’s Democratic Party and the BJP, and an Independent.

Meghalaya threw up a fractured mandate in the Assembly polls on Saturday.

The Congress, which had been in power in the state for the last 10 years, emerged as the single largest party with 21 seats in the elections but could not stitch a post-poll alliance with the regional parties to retain power.
