Conjoined twins of Dhenkanal pass away

Cuttack: The conjoined twin of Dhenkanal Ganga-Jamuma passed away during treatment at Sishu Bhawan here yesterday.

Informing on the shocking incident Sishu Bhawan superintendent Saroj Satpathy said, the death took place after several attempts by the doctors to feed the babies went in vain.

Notably, post admission to Sishu Bhawan the Echo and CT Scan of the twins were done on Wednesday. Later, on Thursday they started facing difficulties in breathing and the doctors had continued the efforts to save their lives till they breathed last.

A seven-members doctors’ team had been formed to treat the twins including Paediatric, Neonatal and Thoracic physicians. Dr Hiranya Mohanty was heading the team.

Worth mentioning, the conjoined baby girl duo was born to Renubala Behera and Pradeep Behera of Khalapala village under Parjang block of Dhenkanal at the District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) a couple of days back. Later, they were shifted to Sishu Bhawan in Cuttack for further treatment in order to avoid any future medical complications.

Informing on the congenital state of the twin Prof Satpathy had said, the case is called ‘Thoracopagus’. In such cases the conjoined babies possess one heart having the same pulse and blood pressure making the chance of separation almost impossible, he added.
