Bhubaneswar: Authorities of the Nandankanan zoo today closed the zoo for visitors following protest over series death of elephants at the zoo.
Hundreds of agitators led by Congress leader and Jatni MLA Suresh Kumar Routray staged a demonstration demanding to shift Daruthenga dumping yard which is located near the zoo.
The demonstrators alleged that that the dumping yard is the main reason behind the spread of herpes virus that has led to the death of four elephants in the zoo so far.
“The authorities must relocate the dumping yard at the earliest possible. Besides, they must take concrete steps to ensure better healthcare facilities for captive animals,” said Routray.
