Bhubaneswar: In an important development for the Congress Party, which is struggling with infighting in the State unit, a majority of leaders who met the AICC observers’ team on Sunday put forth a demand to appoint senior leader Niranjan Patnaik as the Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) president.

Reports say the meeting between the three-member AICC observers’ team and Congress legislature party held at the Congress Bhawan here witnessed MLAs insisting on a leadership change. Party leaders came out openly against incumbent OPCC president Prasad Harichandan and demanded his ouster before the media with Chief Whip Tara Prasad Bahinipati being the vociferous of the lot.

Talking to media persons soon after the meeting, Talsara MLA Prafulla Majhi informed that during their talks with the three-member AICC observer team comprising Gaurav Gogoi, Tamradhwaj Sahu and Jitendra Singh, party MLAs impressed upon them the need to replace Harichandan with Niranjan as the OPCC president. The reason for the OPCC leadership change was also communicated to the team, he added.

However, Majhi claimed that other issues like strengthening the party organization at the grassroots level and sorting out differences between leaders were also taken up during the discussion.

Notably, the AICC observers’ team met the presidents of the District Congress Committees (DCC) earlier in the day to talk on party’s affairs in the State. Sources said the DCC leaders also conveyed their opinion on the change of guard in the state Congress during their meeting with the observers.
