CM Naveen wishes everyone on Odia New Year

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Sunday wished all Odias on the occasion of Odia New Year as per local almanac. Today is also the auspicious Pana Sankranti or Maha Bishuba Sankranti which marks the beginning of the summer season.

CM Naveen Patnaik tweeted on his micro-blogging site: “I wish you all on the occasion of auspicious Bisuba Sankranti and Odia New Year. With the blessings of Lord Jagannath, may the New Year bring happiness and prosperity for all of us.”

“To all my Odia friends across the world, greetings on Maha Vishuba Sankranti! Have a wonderful year ahead. We take immense pride in the rich Odia culture,” tweeted the Prime Minister.

Renowned sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik created an ethereal sand sculpture on this auspicious occasion and shared the image via Twitter: “Greetings on the occasion of #OdiaNewYear. May you be blessed with joy and happiness!”

Pana Sankranti or Maha Bishuba Sankranti is set with the solar cycle of the lunisolar calendar, as the first day of the traditional solar month of Mesha and it marks the beginning of Odia calendar.

In the Odia tradition, the Pana Sankranti is believed to be the birthday of the Hindu deity Hanuman, whose loving devotion to Vishnu avatar Lord Ram in Ramayana is legendary. His temples, along with those of Shiva and Surya are revered on the new year.

Pana Sankranti is similar to new year festivals observed by Hindus elsewhere such as Vaisakhi (north and central India), Bihu (Assam), Pohela Boishakh (Bengal) and Puthandu (Tamil Nadu)
