Puri: Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik released the first-phase financial assistance for the farmers of the state under Krushak Assistance for Livelihood and Income Augmentation (KALIA) scheme here on Friday.

Patnaik sent the cash directly to the accounts of around 12.45 lakh beneficiaries at a mega farmers’ convention at Malatipatapur of the district.

The farmers received Rs 5000 each in the first-phase. They will get another Rs 25,000 in four installments in the future.

A total of Rs 662 crore was sent to farmers today which was alerted to them through SMSes.

Around 65 lakhs farmers, including landless and small and marginal farmers, had applied through the green form.

The second draft beneficiary list will soon be released at all Panchayat offices.

The KALIA scheme’s prime motto is to provide monetary compensation to farmers before the sowing season begins.

The CM addressed the convention of about 2 lakh farmers and a number of party dignitaries. He began with his trademark “Apana mane khushi ta?” (Are you all happy?).

Lauding the farmers, Patnaik said, “The paddy and the vegetables grown here go on to become Mahaprasad of Lord Jagannath. You all are doing a huge contribution with this holy job. This is the reason I chose to name this scheme KALIA.”

“No one can stop KALIA jatra,” he concluded.

Earlier, the CM had paid a visit to the holy trinity at Puri Shri Mandir.
