Class-I student drowns in Malkangiri

Malkangiri: In a tragic incident, a five-year-old student of government-run residential school drowned to death in a canal in Odisha’s Malkangiri district on Monday.

The deceased has been identified as Amit Kalekura, a Class-I student of Gangala Sevashram in the district. The school is run by SC/ST Department, Government of Odisha.

According to the reports, the boy went to nearby canal in order to defecate this morning. He slipped into the canal drowned and drowned with none to help.

On being informed, local police reached the spot and recovered the body. The police sent the body to Pandi Community Health Centre for autopsy.

Following the incident, several students of the school were seen vacating their hostel out of fear. However, the district administration stopped the students and made them return their hostel.

Villagers alleged that the incident occurred due to the negligence of the concerned staff members of the school for letting the class I student to go outside the hostel premises.

A case has been filed citing unnatural death and an investigation is underway, police said.
