Chandrayaan 2 placed into lunar orbit successfully

Bengaluru: India achieved an important milestone today in space research by successfully placing Chandrayaan 2 into the lunar orbit at around 9.02 am.

Informing on the success of the space mission at a press conference later ISRO chief Dr K Sivan informed that the significant milestone was achieved after Chandrayaan 2’s liquid engine was ignited for around 1738 seconds.

While the health of the spacecraft is being continuously monitored from the Mission Operations Complex (MOX) at ISRO Telemetry, Tracking and Command Network (ISTRAC) in Bengaluru with assistance from Indian Deep Space Network (IDSN) antennas at Bylalu, near Bengaluru the space agency has scheduled the next lunar-bound orbit manoeuvres for August 12.

Notably, Chandrayaan-2 successfully entered the lunar orbit today after the accomplishment of nearly 30 days of journey in space which includes five earth-bound orbit raising manoeuvres. The fifth manoeuvre was completed on August 6 with the use of an onboard propulsion system for a firing duration of 1,041 seconds.

The next crucial step in the mission will be carried out on September 2 when the lander will be separated from the orbiter.

The spacecraft will touch down on the Moon’s surface on September 7. It would shed light on a completely unexplored region of the Moon.
