33rd IATO Convention

Bhubaneswar: The Union Government is planning to roll out an ‘Adopt a Heritage’ scheme, in which the private sector and other stakeholders will be roped in to improve facilities at heritage sites.

“We are discussing with ASI to start the scheme so that the ASI protected sites can get better infrastructural facilities,” said Rashmi Verma, Tourism Secretary, Government of India at the inaugural session of the 33rd IATO Annual Convention in Bhubaneswar on Thursday.

Attending his first public event after taking over as the Union Minister for Tourism, KJ Alphons stressed the need for radical ideas to promote tourism in the country.

“We don’t need any time-tested ideas anymore. I shall welcome more radical ideas. We are getting people for ideas and a plan of action will be ready in a month’s time,” he said.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, who inaugurated the event, stressed greater investment in the tourism sector of the state.

“Odisha is a tourism destination. The Government of Odisha has taken a number of initiatives to promote and support investment in the tourism sector. I hope the IATO convention will be helpful in projecting Odisha’s tourism potential,” he said.

On the occasion, hotelier JK Mohanty was conferred with the Hall of Fame, while sprinter Dutee Chand was felicitated for her outstanding performance.
