Census Of Endangered Fishing Cats Begins In Odisha

Bhubaneswar: In a first in the state, the Odisha government has decided to undertake the census of the endangered fishing cats in and around wildlife sanctuaries in the state.

This wild species has the status of an endangered carnivore. Fishing cats are a distinct and curious species.

The fishing cats are mostly nocturnal and it is very hard to track them. So, around 100 hidden cameras have been installed in and around wildlife sanctuaries and forests to track the endangered species.

The cameras have also captured many pictures of the fishing cats in various forests, sources said.

Forest department officials have also engaged fishermen in the census as they are well aware of the movements of the fishing cats.
