Cattle-laden truck falls off bridge; 4 cows dead, 15 injured

Dhenkanal: Four cows were killed and at least 15 sustained injuries after a cattle-laden truck fell off Baji Rout bridge over River Brahmani in Nilakanthapur village in the district last night. Three persons boarding the truck, including the driver and the helper of the vehicle turned critical in the mishap.

The incident took place late in the night while the truck was on its way to Haripur weekly market under Sukinda Police Station area in Jajpur district carrying at least 40 cattle from Balangir district.

After reaching on the bridge, the driver of the vehicle failed to control it and ended up hitting a protection wall. Following the collision the truck fell off the bridge and turned turtle.

Bhuban Police reached the spot immediately after the accident and rushed three injured persons boarding the truck to Bhuban Community Health Centre (CHC) where their condition is stated to be critical. Later, they also rushed the injured cattle to a nearby veterinary hospital for treatment, seizing the truck.

Tension ran high in Bhuban today morning after the news on cattle-laden truck spread and Bajrang Dal activists along with locals staged a road blockade at the site demanding action against the accused. It was removed only after police intervened and pacified the agitators.

This is not for the first time that a cattle-laden truck has been seized in the district. A few days ago a cow-laden truck was seized under Nihalprasad Police Station area in similar fashion after it met with an accident.
