Camera traps installed in Odisha’s Bhitarkanika National Park

Kendrapara: The camera traps have been installed in Bhitarkanika National Park in Kendrapara district of Odisha in order to monitor the movements of animals and poachers. The camera trap installation took place for the first time Bhitarkanika. The process has begun to keep a check on the movement of wildlife in Bhitarkanika through the Polygon Search.

Reportedly in the first phase, 20 cameras have been installed in Barunei, Govandhi, Thakuriada Forest Block and Angari Forest Block of Rajnagar range. The cameras will be installed in five more ranges under the forest.

The video recordings can be stored in the memory storage of this camera for up to one month, added reports.

Rajnagar Mangrove Forest and Wildlife Division DFO Jagyandatta Pati said that once in every four years the All India Tiger Estimation takes place in which the camera traps gets installed. “We were only using the camera traps in tiger reserve and tiger corridors during the year from 2006-2018. We were not focusing on Bhitarkanika like Sundarban due to absence of tigers. However,  after a discussion with National Tiger Conservation(NTC) and Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun we decided to install the camera traps for the upcoming year 2022 in order to keep an eye on our ecosystem,” he said.

He further said that one camera will be installed in every two square kilometre (1 grid ) for the intensive camera trapping. Within the last 10-15 days of camera trapping, we have captured fishing cat, leopard cat, monitor lizard, etc species of animals.

It pertinent to mention that earlier the camera traps had been installed in Sundarban.
