Cabinet approves renaming of Jharsuguda Airport as “Veer Surendra Sai Airport”

Jharsuguda: The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved renaming of Jharsuguda Airport, Odisha as “Veer Surendra Sai Airport, Jharsuguda.” The Ministry of Civil Aviation informed this in a press release.

“Veer Surendra Sai is a well-known freedom fighter of Odisha. Renaming of the Jharsuguda airport in his name will fulfill the long-pending demand of the Odisha Government, which reflects the sentiments of the local public of the respective area. It will also be a befitting tribute to the contribution of the revered personality associated with the State,” said the Ministry in the press release.

Meanwhile, Civil Aviation Minister Suresh Prabhu congratulated the people of #Odisha after Union Cabinet gave its approval on the renaming of newly built Jharsuguda Airports as Veer Surendra Sai Airport.


Notably, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik time and again had urged the Union Government to name the second airport of the state after the well-known freedom fighter and son of the soil. Following Patnaik’s demand, the Prime Minister, during the inauguration ceremony called the airport as Veer Surendra Sai Airport, however, the Odisha CM had demanded to issue a notification in this regard and commence flight services from it soon.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had inaugurated the second airport in Odisha on September 22.  Spread across over 1,027.5 acres of land with a 2,390-metre long runway, the area of terminal building of the airport is 4,000 sqm.

The airport has been developed for all-weather operations, including night operations for A-320 type of aircraft.
