Keonjhar: Putting a big question mark over the safety and security of temples in the district, some unidentified burglars looted cash along with gold and silver ornaments from a Durga temple located near Keonjhar bus stand last night.

The loot took place late in the night while the temple was locked up and all the priests were away. The burglars entered the temple premises by breaking the gate lock and took away cash kept in the donation box. They also stole valuable gold and silver ornaments of the deity including one necklace, one waist bead and at least five silver crowns before fleeing away.

“I reached the temple at around 3.50 AM to make arrangements for puja rituals and found the gate broken. The temple donation box was found open with the cash missing. The looters managed to steal the silver crows by breaking the almirah kept on the premises,” informed Bhaskar Panda, priest of the temple.

Meanwhile, the locals have blamed the police for negligence, taking into account the fact that the local police station is located only half a kilometer away from the temple. Not only that, the District Collector’s office is located only a stone’s throw away from the spot.

Keonjhar Town Police have reached the spot and started investigation into the incident.
