Brown sugar worth more than Rs 1 lakh seized in Khordha district, 1 held

Khordha: After rampant incidents of illegal trade of brown sugar in the urban areas, now the root of the illegal trade has been witnessed spreading even to the rural belts of some districts in Odisha. Such an incident has been witnessed on Tuesday in Khordha district.

Today morning a special team of Excise officials from Tangi conducted a raid near Balugan of the district and seized 10 grams of brown sugar from an illegal trader of brown sugar from Chakradharpur sahi in Balugan. The market price of the seized brown sugar would be around Rs. 1 lakh, one of the Excise sleuths said. One person has been arrested in this connection.

The accused has been identified as Pandav Behera (28).

The raid was conducted by Excise official Alok Pradhan from Tangi and Manoj Barik of Balugan Excise Dept. They had prior information that since long days illegal trade of brown sugar was going on in Tani, Balugan, Kuhudi, Banapur, Nachuni and Nirakarpur area. However, after effort of several days today the illegal trader was nabbed. Further investigation of the case is underway.
