Bridge collapses in Sambalpur, Driver rescued after several hours of operation

Sambalpur: A dumper driver has been rescued by fire fighters personnel from imminent danger after the Jhulen Bridge on National Highway 49 which connects Kuchinda to Sambalpur and Deogarh over Kharla river in Sambalpur district collapsed on Thursday night.

Reportedly, the truck was crossing the bridge when the platform collapsed and the vehicle fell into the river.

Thereafter, Kuchinda police and fire fighters rushed to the spot and initiated the rescue operation. Although, the driver of the vehicle could not be traced immediately as his legs were pressed in the damaged vehicle. However, after several hours of rescue operation the driver was rescued.

The vehicular movement along the NH has also come to a standstill.

Meanwhile, the fire fighter Paulesh Kujjur said that the driver was in a serious condition and he could not be rescued immediately despite their best efforts as his legs were stuck in the damaged vehicle. He also added that they used gas cutters to remove the damaged parts of the vehicle and rescued him safely. He has been admitted to Kuchinda Sub Divisional Hospital.

Till the last reports came in, Sambalpur District Collector Shubham Saxena and Superintendent of Police B Gangadhar visited the spot for inspection.
